Old black mulch has a short shelf life. It fades, breaks down, and after a season or two it just looks tired. That's exactly what we were dealing with here - front beds and tree rings that had seen better days. The fix wasn't complicated, but it made a huge difference.
We pulled out all the old black mulch from the front beds and the two front yard tree rings, then replaced everything with chocolate rock. It's a warmer, richer look that holds up over time and doesn't need to be replaced every year like traditional mulch. Once it's down, it stays looking sharp.
On top of the rock swap, we added fresh plants throughout the front beds to fill things out and give the space more texture and life. We also planted a brand new tree in the front yard and built a natural rock border around it - the kind of small detail that makes a new planting look intentional and finished right from the start.
That's really what separates a good landscaping job from a great one. It's not just about dropping plants in the ground. It's about choosing the right ground cover, spacing things properly, and making sure every element ties together. Chocolate rock pairs well with the existing shrubs here - the warm tones complement the home's exterior without fighting for attention.
The after-hours shot says it all. The pathway lights glow, the beds look full and clean, and the whole front of the house just reads differently. A well-done front yard update like this doesn't just look good - it makes the home feel more put-together from the moment you pull into the driveway.
