Some yards just need grass. Others need a complete reset before a single roll of sod ever touches the ground. This was one of those jobs. The yard was patchy, uneven, and bare in all the wrong places - the kind of situation where throwing down sod without addressing what's underneath would just set you up for the same problem down the road.
Before we laid anything, we handled the groundwork. That meant excavation, regrading to fix drainage issues, and bringing in screened topsoil to give the sod a proper base to root into. It takes more time upfront. But it's the difference between a lawn that holds up and one that struggles from day one.
Once the ground was ready, we installed fresh-cut fescue sod across both the front and back of the property. Fescue is a solid choice for yards with tree coverage and varying sun exposure - it handles shade better than a lot of other grass types and holds up well through the seasons. Getting it fresh-cut matters too. The quicker it goes from farm to ground, the better it roots.
The finished result speaks for itself. What was bare, rutted soil became a full, green lawn - front yard, side slopes, and all the way through the back. Clean edges, solid coverage, and a foundation built to actually last. That's what a proper sod installation looks like when the prep work is done right.
We do this kind of full-scope work regularly. If your yard is past the point of just overseeding or patching, and you want it actually fixed - ground prep included - this is the process that gets you there.
